Quick summary
  • 70-year-old woman fined €1,250 over her cat’s repeated trespassing
  • Tribunal ruled the owner liable, with €30 fines for each future visit
  • Cat now confined indoors, showing signs of stress and aggression
  • New hearing in December could lead to €2,000 more in penalties

A court in southern France has ordered a 70-year-old woman to pay €1,250 after her cat was found guilty of repeatedly invading a neighbor’s property, turning an ordinary pet dispute into a costly legal fight.

The Béziers tribunal ruled that Dominique Valdès, owner of a ginger cat named Rémi, was responsible for the alleged disturbances in her neighbor’s garden. In addition to the fine, the court imposed a €30 penalty for each future “trespass” by the feline.

According to the complaint, Rémi had allegedly left paw prints on wet plaster, urinated on a duvet, and defecated in the neighbor’s garden. Valdès, however, insists that the accusations are based on speculation.

She argued that several other similar-looking cats roam freely in the area, making it impossible to conclusively identify her pet as the culprit.

“When I received notification of the conviction, it was as if I had been violently struck on the head,” Dominique told French newspaper Le Parisien.

Since the verdict, Valdès says she has been forced to confine Rémi indoors to prevent further penalties. “He’s gained weight and become aggressive. It’s like he’s been sentenced to house arrest,” she said.

The pensioner maintains that the decision was unfair, claiming the judge dismissed her concerns about the lack of evidence.

The dispute, however, is far from over. Valdès has been summoned back to court in December after reports that Rémi once again crossed the property line. If found guilty, she could face an additional €2,000 ($2,300) fine and a daily penalty of €150 ($172).

The case has sparked debate across France over pet ownership responsibilities and property rights. It also highlights how seemingly minor neighborhood disputes can escalate into costly legal challenges, raising concerns about fairness and judicial overreach.

For homeowners and pet owners, the case underscores the importance of understanding local property laws, legal liability, and animal behavior, especially as pet-related disputes continue to rise across Europe.
