Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have officially confirmed the departure of manager Christophe Galtier in a club statement, marking the end of his tenure.

Despite the relatively short stint, he achieved success by securing a double triumph in Ligue 1 and the Trophee des Champions during his tenure.

The Parisian club wasted no time in progressing forward, swiftly taking steps to introduce Luis Enrique as Galtier’s successor in the French capital.

Luis Enrique, a former coach of Spain, Barcelona, and Roma, is poised to take charge of PSG.

Galtier faced numerous challenges during his tenure as PSG boss. Managing a squad that comprised some of the most prominent personalities in the game, at a club burdened with immense pressure to achieve success, proved to be a demanding experience for the former Lille coach.

Despite achieving success in domestic competitions, Galtier’s tenure at PSG is likely to be evaluated based on his performance in the UEFA Champions League, as the club’s management is notoriously focused on winning this prestigious tournament.

However, the French giants experienced disappointment in the last-16 stage, as they were eliminated by Bayern Munich with a 3-0 aggregate victory, resulting in an early exit from the competition.

Throughout Galtier’s time as manager, there were various off-field challenges that arose.

One notable incident involved Lionel Messi’s unauthorized trip to Saudi Arabia during the crucial period of the Ligue 1 campaign. This created controversy and disrupted the team’s rhythm.

Additionally, reports emerged of a strained relationship between Messi and Galtier, with a contentious incident occurring during a training session in March.

The Argentine superstar allegedly engaged in a heated dispute with his coach, leaving the training session prematurely and refusing to participate in a specific exercise.

These incidents contributed to the escalating tension between the two individuals.

The Ligue 1 triumph served as a temporary cover-up for the underlying issues at the club, as PSG’s performance in the early stages of 2023 was far from satisfactory.

By mid-February, they had already been eliminated from both the French Cup and the Champions League, winning only four out of 11 matches.

Although renowned for his tactical versatility in French football, Galtier encountered difficulties in establishing a clear style and philosophy within the team.

Throughout his tenure, he experimented with various formations, including the 4-3-1-2, 4-4-2, 3-5-2, and 4-1-3-2.

However, many observers felt that the strength of the squad compensated for the shortcomings in his tactical approach.

It became evident that Galtier’s tactics did not consistently deliver the desired results, and his inability to imprint a cohesive playing style became a defining characteristic of his time at the helm of PSG.

The team’s reliance on individual talents overshadowed the strategic aspects of the game, leading to criticism of Galtier’s tactical acumen.
