The political battleground in Washington grew more intense this week after Rep. Marc Veasey (D-Texas) drafted articles of impeachment against Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel.
A source familiar with the matter confirmed the move, which followed Veasey’s pointed social media post accusing both officials of dishonesty.
“If @NancyMace (soon to be a sucker and loser in her governors race) wants to strip @Ilhan of her committees for words she never said, MANY people are saying we should impeach the incompetent Kash Patel and Pam Bondi for the lies they ACTUALLY TOLD!!” Veasey wrote on the platform X.
While Veasey has not yet provided detailed grounds for impeachment, his post referenced two high-profile controversies:
Pam Bondi’s Epstein Case Files: Bondi previously pledged to release Department of Justice case files tied to Jeffrey Epstein, a promise that has drawn both political pressure and public scrutiny.
Kash Patel’s Announcement: Patel announced an arrest linked to the shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The individual was later released and cleared of any connection to the case, though Patel’s initial statement was technically factual.
Neither Bondi’s office nor Patel’s office has responded to requests for comment.
Veasey’s move comes as partisan battles over censure and committee assignments escalate. Just recently, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) threatened to push Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) off her committees, sparking backlash from Democrats.
Meanwhile, Democrats pulled back on a motion to censure Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) after Republicans joined them to block a censure attempt against Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-N.J.).
The climate reflects an era where censure votes and impeachment threats are increasingly being used as political weapons, intensifying gridlock in Congress.
Impeaching a Cabinet-level official is exceedingly rare. The House voted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas just last year, marking the first such case in more than a century. However, the Senate swiftly rejected it.
Veasey’s impeachment drafts against Bondi and Patel, if formally filed, would test once again the willingness of lawmakers to deploy impeachment as a political tool rather than a last-resort measure.
