Hunter Biden has been indicted on federal firearms charges, marking a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the president’s son. The indictment alleges that Biden lied about his drug use when purchasing a firearm in October 2018, a period when he was grappling with addiction to crack cocaine.
In addition to these firearms charges, Hunter Biden has also been under scrutiny for his business dealings. The special counsel overseeing the case has hinted at possible charges related to failure to pay taxes on time, either in Washington or California, where he resides.
This indictment comes at a time when congressional Republicans are pursuing an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, largely centered around Hunter Biden’s business activities. While there has been testimony about how Hunter Biden leveraged the “Biden brand” for overseas work, concrete evidence of wrongdoing by the president has not been produced.
Previously, there was a gun possession charge against Hunter Biden as part of a plea deal that also involved guilty pleas to misdemeanor tax charges. However, this agreement faced complications during a court hearing in July when a judge raised concerns about its unusual terms.
Hunter Biden’s defense argues that the part of the deal preventing prosecution on the gun charge if he stays out of trouble is still valid, including immunity from other potential charges. Prosecutors, on the other hand, contend that the agreement never went into effect and is now void.
Republicans criticized the plea agreement as a “sweetheart deal” that would have allowed Hunter Biden to serve probation instead of jail time after admitting to failing to pay taxes in 2017 and 2018. During those two years, he earned approximately $4 million, including fees from a company he co-founded with the CEO of a Chinese business conglomerate and the Ukrainian energy company Burisma.
Congressional Republicans have been conducting their investigations into the Justice Department’s handling of the case and various aspects of Hunter Biden’s business dealings, attempting to establish a direct connection between his financial affairs and his father.
However, they have not produced evidence showing the president’s direct involvement in his son’s work, although there were occasional interactions between the president and his son’s clients.
