Alfred W. Ruf, 71, of Indiana, was sentenced after pleading guilty to aggravated violence posing a risk of death in Wayne County Court.
This follows charges that Ruf attempted to poison his wife’s drinks with various medicines as part of a scheme to murder her and marry her daughter. Ruf’s original charge of conspiracy to commit murder was dismissed. He was instead sentenced to four years in prison and five years on probation.
The alarming story traces back to many occurrences in 2021, when Ruf’s wife, Lisa Bishop, 51, was hospitalized multiple times for symptoms such as migraines, sleepiness, and diarrhea.
Bishop tested positive for multiple illegal drugs, including MDMA and cocaine, which she denied taking knowingly. Bishop’s concern led her to report her husband to the police in 2022, alleging Ruf was poisoning her.

During the police investigation, Ruf confessed to the crime, claiming that his wife’s 31-year-old daughter had given him the drugs and told him to put them in her mother’s drinks.
Ruf additionally claimed to have had a sexual relationship with the daughter, according to sources.
Ruf was sentenced to four years in prison and five years probation after pleading guilty. The decision, documented in court records, was confirmed by multiple news sources, including the Kansas City Star and USA Today.
It’s unclear whether the daughter has faced any charges related to these allegations. The investigation is ongoing, and investigators have yet to provide additional information from the arrest affidavit.
