Ramon Abbas, also known as Hushpuppi, an alleged Nigerian cybercriminal, was handed an 11-year jail sentence for cyber fraud by a US Central District Court in California.

Hushpuppi, who was arrested back in 2020, now has nine more years to serve out his 11-year sentence after serving two of them already from 2020.

On the night his apartment at the Palazzo Versace in United Arab Emirates (UAE) was raided in an operation code-named Fox Hunt 2 in June 2020, Abbas was arrested alongside eleven others over allegations of hacking, impersonation, scamming, banking fraud, and identity theft, and thereafter extradited to the US for prosecution.

Detectives on that very night seized more than 150 million dirham (about $40 million) in cash, 13 luxury cars worth Dh 25 million ($7M), 21 laptops, 47 smartphones, 15 memory storage devices, 5 external hard drives and 800,000 emails of potential victims alongside suitcases full of cash.

Abbas is also accused of committing fraud in Nigeria as he is also wanted by Nigeria’s financial crime police, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Hushpuppi pleaded guilty to money laundering on July 28, 2021, and named Abba Kyari, a deputy commissioner of police in Nigeria, as a co-conspirator in his $1.1 million swindle deal.

The FBI was given a warrant to arrest Abba Kyari by a US Court the next day. After the recording of his chat with Hushpuppi was made public, the Police chief was further associated.

Hushpuppi’s sentencing was postponed by Judge Otis Wright from September 19 to November 3, 2022. The defendant’s application for a delay in judgment was first denied by the judge.

But on November 3, 2022, the US Central District Court in California found him guilty of his accused crimes and finally sentenced him to 11 years in prison.
