Iconic American musician Stevie Wonder lands in Ghana, officially becomes a citizen

After taking the Oath of Allegiance and receiving his Certificate of Citizenship, renowned American singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder is now formally a citizen of Ghana. 

On Monday, May 13, the event was held at Ghana’s official seat of government, the Jubilee House, and it also happened to be Wonder’s 74th birthday. 

This is in response to his 2021 announcement that he would be moving to Ghana during an interview with well-known American talk show host Oprah Winfrey.

In the interview, Stevie Wonder expressed his desire to leave the political unrest in the US and move to a community-oriented culture. 

Stevie Wonder was greeted with enthusiasm by industry insiders and fans on Monday, May 13, 2024, upon his arrival at Kotoka International Airport. 

Showcasing his unwavering love of music, he accompanied a local band in playing the drums and mingling before carrying out his duties. 

Kow Essuman, President Akufo-Addo’s legal advisor, welcomed the renowned artist to Ghana on social media, writing, “Stevie Wonder is officially Ghanaian.” 

He recently took the Oath of Allegiance and was granted citizenship through Jubilee House registration. Congratulations and salutations from Ghana, Sir. Born Steveland Hardaway Morris, the Grammy Award-winning musician is well-known throughout the world for his contributions to a wide range of musical genres, including jazz, funk, gospel, pop, R&B, and soul.
