An Indiana mother has been sentenced to 65 years in prison after being convicted of starving her 3-month-old son to death. Caylin Monroe, 23, was found guilty of murder and neglect resulting in death following the tragic 2022 death of her infant son, Silas Chance-Kent Scott.
The heartbreaking case began in February 2022 when authorities were called to Monroe’s home in Warrick County after reports of an unresponsive infant.
When officers arrived, they found baby Silas deceased. An autopsy later revealed that the baby died from starvation, despite the mother’s claims that she had fed him earlier in the day.

Monroe told police that Silas was “small, but healthy” at birth and had difficulty gaining weight. She admitted to occasionally forgetting to feed him, especially when he was quiet or when she was busy caring for her other children.

Investigators found that the baby’s stomach contained no formula or milk, raising serious concerns about his care.
Monroe had been investigated by the Department of Child Services (DCS) before, after a previous incident with another child, which led her to be required to keep a feeding log. However, no such log was found for Silas.
Monroe’s then-boyfriend, Jakob Scott, 22, was also arrested in connection with the death. During his police interview, Scott allegedly said that Silas did not get fed unless he cried, and he couldn’t remember if the baby had been fed the day he died.

Monroe was sentenced on November 15, 2024, while Scott faces similar charges. His jury trial was scheduled for December 2, 2024. This case has sparked outrage and disbelief over the neglect suffered by a helpless infant.
