Authorities in Shelbyville, Indiana, have charged a mother with child neglect after police discovered her 22-month-old toddler dead in the driveway of their home late Wednesday night.
The Shelbyville Police Department said officers were dispatched to the Westar trailer park following an emergency call. When they arrived, they found Sophie Igou standing outside her residence alongside her unresponsive child.
Officers attempted lifesaving measures but determined the toddler had already died, according to the department’s statement. The child’s name and cause of death have not been released.
Igou was taken into custody on a preliminary charge of neglect of a dependent causing death. Police noted in their press release that “additional charges may be imminent” as investigators await the results of an autopsy scheduled for Friday by the Shelby County Coroner’s Office.
Authorities have not disclosed Igou’s age, and no further details have been provided regarding the child’s condition prior to death. The Shelbyville Police Department said the case remains an “active and ongoing investigation.”
