The conflict between Russia and Ukraine intensified over the weekend as both nations launched aerial attacks, causing injuries and significant damage, officials reported early Sunday. The fate of a proposed 30-day ceasefire, which aimed to halt the three-year-long war, remains uncertain.
Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed conditional support on Thursday for Washington’s proposal for a temporary ceasefire. However, he emphasized that Russian forces would continue their operations until “several crucial conditions” were resolved.
In the days following Putin’s statement, both sides escalated hostilities. Heavy aerial strikes were exchanged, with Russia advancing on the battlefield, aiming to expel Ukrainian forces from their foothold in the Kursk region, located in western Russia.
On Sunday, Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of Russia’s Belgorod region, reported on the Telegram messaging app that a Ukrainian drone attack had injured three individuals, including a 7-year-old child. Two of the injuries occurred after a drone struck a residential home in the Gubkinsky district, igniting a fire. The third injury was reported in the village of Dolgoye.

In the southwestern region of Voronezh, Governor Alexander Gusev stated that air defense units successfully intercepted and destroyed more than 15 Ukrainian drones. No injuries or damages were reported in this incident.
Similarly, Rostov’s acting governor confirmed that defense forces had repelled a nighttime drone attack on the region, with no casualties or destruction reported.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials documented a series of Russian drone strikes. In the northern Chernihiv region, firefighters worked to extinguish a fire at a high-rise building that had been ignited by an aerial attack, according to Ukraine’s state emergency service.
Ukrainian media reported explosions in the Kyiv region and surrounding areas after the country’s air force issued warnings of potential drone attacks on the capital and other central regions. As of 0300 GMT on Sunday, authorities had yet to release official information regarding any damage in the Kyiv area.
The latest escalation underscores the fragile state of ceasefire negotiations, as both sides continue to trade blows in the ongoing conflict. With no clear resolution in sight, the prospect of peace remains as tenuous as ever.
