Inter Milan defeated Atletico Madrid in their Champions League round of 16 match thanks to a goal from Marko Arnautovic.
Atletico keeper Jan Oblak parried Lautaro Martinez’s shot into the path of Arnautovic, and the Austrian forward completed with a strong shot from a close range.
Earlier in the second half, Arnautovic had squandered a number of excellent opportunities.

He fired over with the goal gaping and headed over the bar.
Marcus Thuram, who sustained an injury shortly before halftime, was replaced by Arnautovic, a former forward for West Ham and Stoke.
The hosts, who finished second in the Champions League the previous season, had the better opportunities in the game and twice had Martinez’s headers saved by Oblak.
After recuperating from a knee injury, Alvaro Morata entered the game as a second-half substitute for Atletico, but he was unable to have a major influence on the game in Diego Simeone’s 100th Champions League game as manager.

Yann Sommer, the goalkeeper for Inter, preserved his 21st clean sheet in all competitions this season without needing to make a stop.
With nine points atop Serie A, Simone Inzaghi’s team has not lost in any competition since a 20 December loss to Bologna in the Coppa Italia.
On March 13, Atletico will host Civitas Metropolitano for the second leg.
