The surfing community is in shock following the tragic death of 36-year-old Giuliana Manfrini, who was fatally injured by a swordfish while surfing near Pulau Masokut Island off the western coast of Sumatra, Indonesia.
Manfrini, an Italian thrill-seeker known for her adventurous spirit, suffered a devastating injury when the fish leaped from the water and pierced her chest with its bill.
Witnesses report that Manfrini was enjoying the waves when the unexpected incident occurred.
Fellow surfers Massimo Ferro and Alexandre Ribas quickly provided first aid, and she was rushed to a nearby medical clinic, but unfortunately, the injuries were too severe to survive.

Manfrini was more than just a passionate surfer; she co-founded Awave Travel, specializing in surfing and snowboarding trips.
Describing herself as a “surf & snow travel expert,” she had a law degree and a deep love for adventure.
The Indonesian surfing charter company Naa Laut Mentawai Blue paid tribute to her on social media, expressing their sorrow and remembering her as a vibrant, joyful person.
Fabio Giulivi, the mayor of her hometown, Venaria Reale, Italy, shared his condolences, stating that the community is heartbroken by the loss of someone who had so much passion for life and the ocean.
Manfrini had previously expressed her love for the pristine wilderness of North Sumatra, sharing her enthusiasm for surfing in the region.
Swordfish attacks on humans are extremely rare. According to a 2007 article in the Asian Journal of Surgery, only one previous attack had resulted in death, highlighting the unusual nature of this tragic incident.
