Gloria Carter, the mother of renowned American rap icon Jay Z, recently celebrated her union with her longtime partner, Roxanne Wilshire, in a lavish ceremony attended by numerous celebrities.
The star-studded wedding took place at Tribeca 360° in Manhattan on Sunday and boasted an impressive guest list, including entertainment mogul Tyler Perry, singer Kelly Rowland, Tina Knowles (Beyoncé’s mother), Corey Gamble, and ‘Good Morning America’ co-anchor Robin Roberts.
Jay-Z and his wife, Beyoncé, paused their ‘Renaissance Tour’ to attend the event alongside their first child, Blue Ivy. The attendees reveled in the celebration until the early hours of Monday morning, July 3.
Since Gloria Carter openly revealed her $exual orientation as a lesbian in 2017 through Jay-Z’s song “Smile” from the album “4:44,” she has become an inspiration for the LGBTQ+ community.
Initially, Gloria had reservations about Jay-Z discussing her $exuality in such a personal song, but the mother and son had deep conversations about it. Eventually, Jay-Z reassured her and incorporated a poem she had written into the song, to which she agreed.
In the song, Jay-Z expressed his unwavering support for his mother, rapping: “Mama had four kids, but she’s a lesbian/Had to pretend so long that she’s a thespian/Had to hide in the closet, so she medicates/Society shame and the pain was too much to take. Cried tears of joy when you fell in love/Don’t matter to me if it’s a him or her/I just wanna see you smile through all the hate/Marie Antoinette, baby, let ’em eat cake.”
Jay-Z acknowledged that his mother’s revelation and the subsequent events transformed their relationship dynamics and strengthened their bond. Speaking on “The Shop: Uninterrupted,” he shared, “When she first heard that song, she got super defensive… We talked through it. And then, when she flew back to L.A., she had written a poem. She wrote that on the plane. It came with the American Airlines notepad… I was like, ‘You got bars, ma!'”
Gloria Carter and Roxanne Wilshire began dating in 2018, and after five years, they joyfully exchanged vows in front of their loved ones.
