In a widely anticipated political event, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Ohio Senator JD Vance have agreed to debate on October 1, 2024. This discussion tries to establish which of the two is more equipped as a vice presidential candidate in the forthcoming November elections.
CBS confirmed the impending debate between Walz and Vance via their X account, inviting both candidates to debate in New York City. The network offered four probable event dates: September 17, September 24, October 1, and October 8.
Walz confirmed his attendance by sharing CBS’s tweet, which said, “See you on October 1, JD.” The Harris-Walx team then released a statement saying that Walz is willing to debate “if Vance shows up.”
Vance also accepted the October 1 offer in a post on X, challenging Walz to another discussion on September 18. However, the Harris-Walz team has not responded to Vance’s invitation for an earlier CNN debate.
CNN staff verified Vance’s acceptance of the debate offer. CBS Evening News anchor Norah O’Donnell and Face the Nation’s Margaret Brennan will moderate the October 1 discussion, according to the network.
Whether Walz and Vance would square off before the November 5 general election was questionable. President Joe Biden has exited the campaign, prompting Democrats to choose Vice President Kamala Harris to lead their ticket.
Vance has centered his campaign on Harris, whom he was scheduled to face before Biden’s withdrawal. He has also criticized Walz, questioning his military record as a retired Army National Guard member.
Former President Donald Trump indicated a wish for Vance to debate Walz on CBS, and the network is considering possible dates for the meeting.
The discussion between Walz and Vance is scheduled to take place weeks after the September 10 top-of-the-ticket debate between Trump and Harris, which was just confirmed to appear on ABC News.
Trump said that he has clinched numerous debate dates with three separate networks. Fox News offered a discussion between Harris and Trump on September 4, while NBC News plans to host another debate on September 25.
During a recent visit in Michigan, Harris stated that she was “happy to have that conversation” about the further debate.
On Thursday, Harris’ team announced that Trump had “accepted our proposal for three debates,” including one between the vice presidential running mates and two presidential debates.
Given Trump’s participation in the September 10 CBS debate, Harris-Walz spokesperson Michael Tyler stated that “the American people will have another opportunity” to see Harris and Trump on the debate stage in October, without naming a date or network.
Both camps have yet to establish a precise date or network for the second presidential debate.
As the political atmosphere heats up, the October 1 debate between Walz and Vance promises to be a watershed event in the fight for vice presidential nomination, giving voters a clear picture of each candidate’s qualifications and vision for the future.
