Seven-time UEFA Champions League winners AC Milan played their first Champions League in seven years as they return to a top level European football and were given a rude awakening in the first ten-minute spell before half-time that threatened to take the game away from Liverpool.

Jordan Henderson’s stunning strike separated both sides as Liverpool came from behind to beat AC Milan 3-2 at Anfield to get their Champions League campaign off to a winning start.

The Reds made a bright start at Anfield on Wednesday night, and went ahead through a Fikayo Tomori own goal in the ninth minute as a reward for the home side’s early dominance.

Liverpool were handed a penalty five minutes later, but goalkeeper Mike Maignan denied the Reds a 2-0 lead with a fine double save.

Fikayo Tomori’s early own goal was a as Mike Maignan saved Mohamed Salah’s penalty.

Goals from Ante Rebic and Brahim Diaz turned the game on its head completely as they pounced on the Reds defensive lapses with a surprise 2-1 lead.

The lead didn’t last long as Salah levelled the scores after his penalty miss. The Egyptian beats the offside trap to score three minutes into the restart.

Henderson’s thunderous finish proved a deserving winner for Jurgen Klopp’s side in the 70th minute.

He came up with a terrific half-volley from just outside the box and it was definitely the moment of the game.

The Captain, Jordan Henderson was handed the man of the match for his winning strike, but he did struggle during the back end of the opening half.

“It was a brilliant game,” said Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp. “Very exciting, very entertaining with 10-15 minutes where we lost the plot.”
