Heartbreaking Testimonies in Court

The sentencing hearing included emotional testimonies from Riley’s family. Her mother, Allyson Phillips, gave a heart-wrenching account of the moment she learned of her daughter’s death.

“Jose took no pity on my scared, panicked, and struggling child,” Allyson Phillips said, her voice breaking with grief.

Riley’s sister, Lauren Phillips, also spoke of the horror she felt knowing her sister’s final moments were filled with fear.

“I think about how scared she must have been and how that man,” Lauren said, pointing toward Ibarra in the courtroom, “took that from her.”

Before she went out for her run, Riley had sent a text message to her mother, which prosecutors highlighted during the trial, further emphasizing the young woman’s innocent plans for a peaceful jog that tragically turned into a nightmare.

Riley, who was studying nursing at Augusta University, was described by her family and friends as a kind-hearted and determined student with a bright future ahead. Her death has left a community in shock and mourning.
