Real Madrid defeated their local rivals Getafe, thanks in large part to goals from Joselu, to reclaim the top spot in La Liga.
After 14 minutes, the former Stoke striker headed home Lucas Vazquez’s cross to give Carlo Ancelotti’s team the lead. Early in the second half, he completed a clinical finish to seal the victory.
Getafe’s Mason Greenwood and Borja Mayoral struck the post, but Real Madrid held on to lead Girona by two points.
Getafe now sits 10th in the table after the loss.
Encouraged by Jude Bellingham’s return from suspension, Madrid got off to a strong start and took the lead rightfully when Joselu headed past David Soria, the Getafe custodian, following some excellent work by Vazquez down the right.
After keeping Los Blancos at bay for the most of the half without posing any threat of their own, Jose Bordalas decided to make three changes at halftime.
Greenwood cut inside after moving to the right and watched his near-post attempt miss the mark by a large margin.
But that did nothing more than spur Madrid into action, and they soon doubled their lead when Joselu, having received a pass from Vinicius Jr., scored crisply from the edge of the box.
Shortly after, the Brazilian ought to have made it three when Joselu, who had been thoroughly outclassed by Bellingham, selflessly squared it. With his first touch, Vinicius took Soria down, but with the goal at his mercy, he suddenly shot at the goalkeeper’s legs.
After Luis Milla won control on the edge of the visitors’ penalty area, Getafe had a chance to set up a spectacular finale, but Mayoral hammered the ball against the post. Madrid was able to see the game out, condemning the hosts to just their second home league defeat of the season.
Now, Madrid’s focus is on Sunday’s derby matchup with Atletico.
