Józef Tischner Fellowship 2026: Fully Funded Research in Vienna for Polish Scholars

Finding the right support for high-level academic work can feel like a secondary career in itself. However, for Polish scholars in the humanities and social sciences, the path to international recognition just got a lot clearer. The Józef Tischner Fellowship 2026 has officially opened its doors, offering a bridge between ambitious research and a world-class academic environment.

Hosted at the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM), this program isn’t just a grant; it’s an invitation to join a community that values deep thought over quick outputs. If you’ve been looking for financial aid that truly respects the rigors of independent research, this fully funded residency in Vienna might be the breakthrough you need for the 2026–2027 academic year.

What the Józef Tischner Fellowship 2026 Offers Successful Fellows?

Securing a spot as a Józef Tischner Fellow is a career-defining milestone. The program provides a four-month window of “uninterrupted research time” between September 2026 and June 2027. This isn’t just about a desk and a chair; it’s about being “backed by a generous monthly stipend and full academic support” in the heart of Europe.

Financial Support Breakdown

The funding structure is designed to let scholars focus entirely on their projects without the distraction of part-time work or external financial stress:

  • Postdoctoral Fellows: Those who have already defended their PhD will receive a monthly stipend of EUR 3,300.
  • Doctoral Candidates: Researchers currently enrolled in a PhD program will receive EUR 2,750 per month.

Beyond the Stipend

Beyond the cash, the IWM removes the logistical hurdles of international study. Fellows receive “fully funded office space, high-speed internet, in-house research infrastructure, and complete administrative support”—all provided without a single fee.

You also gain immediate entry into the IWM’s inner circle, attending exclusive seminars, workshops, and lectures that put your work in front of the world’s leading thinkers.

Eligibility Criteria for the Józef Tischner Fellowship 2026

To keep the quality of research at its peak, the IWM has set specific benchmarks for the 2026 cohort. To be considered, you must:

  1. Academic Status: Be enrolled in a doctoral program in the humanities or social sciences OR have obtained a PhD in the humanities or social sciences within the last four years (specifically, not before 10 February 2022).
  2. Nationality: Be a Polish citizen or a permanent resident of Poland.
  3. Research Alignment: Propose a project that connects with at least one of IWM’s core research fields, such as Digital Humanism, Europe’s Futures, or Ukraine and the World.
  4. Deadline: Tuesday, 10 February 2026, at 23:59 CET.
  5. Results: Final decisions will be communicated by 30 April 2026.

The Application Roadmap

The application process is strictly digital. To apply, you’ll need to head to the official IWM Application Portal. You should prepare a brief letter of motivation, a concise project description (max. 550 characters), and a more detailed proposal (max. 7,500 characters) that outlines your methods and work plan.
