Junior Pope’s death: Investigation Bureau report uncovers shocking cause of boat accident

The preliminary report of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) about the boat tragedy that claimed the lives of actor Junior Pope and four other individuals on April 10 in the Anam River is now available to the public.

The agency stated in a report that was made public on Friday, May 24, under the direction of Cpt. Alex Baden, that it learned about the accident through social media rather than through formal notification.

On April 12, 2024, investigators from the NSIB’s Enugu Regional office were sent to the scene of the accident, according to the NSIB.

It claimed that their inquiry revealed the uncertified status of the unfortunate boat’s driver. The wooden fishing canoe was occupied by a single person. The boat’s rowdiness diverted the driver’s attention, preventing him from keeping an eye out as needed.

The crossing canoe was travelling considerably more slowly than the boat, which was travelling at a tremendous speed.

The only person inside the canoe saw the rapidly approaching boat and leaped into the river to escape; the boat struck the canoe with great force, causing it to capsize and throwing everyone inside into the Anam River,” the director stated.

The study claimed that only one person on the boat had a life jacket, and he survived the boat disaster, in contrast to the movie producer’s claims that they were given life jackets.

The NSIB further stated that the boat’s operator did not supply the life jacket. On the fibre boat with an outboard motor, there was only one person wearing a life jacket.

The operator did not deliver the life jacket for the lone passenger who was wearing it. One of the survivors was the passenger in the life jacket. There was an outboard motor installed in the boat.

The boat’s passenger and person manifest was missing. There were no qualified divers nearby to help with the rescue attempt, and it was not completed in a timely manner.

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) was advised by the bureau’s safety recommendations to make sure that all boats engaged in commercial operations (transporting passengers and cargo) on the national inland waterways are registered.

The authority must make sure that sufficient safety precautions are put in place and upheld in our inland waterways, it was noted.
