The Red’s boss Jurgen Klopp, has compared the squad’s confidence challenges to recent ones encountered by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo and wants his players to “fight” their way through their challenging start.

The Reds have only won two of their first seven league games this season with 10 points off of the league-leading Arsenal.

Liverpool are now ninth in the Premier League with a game left to play.

The team’s 3-3 draw at home against Brighton on Saturday after coming back from a 2-0 deficit to lead 3-2 was an illustration of the broader malaise afflicting the group.

In an effort to address his team’s maddening inconsistency, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp claims that even Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo may experience confidence issues.

Klopp Compares his struggling side with Messi
Liverpool’s boss mentioned that Lionel Messi had a tough start at Paris Saint-Germain last season.

However, Lionel Messi scored just six goals in his first Ligue 1 season at PSG in 2021–2022, Ronaldo has started just once for Manchester United in the Premier League this season and was absent from the Manchester derby on Sunday.

Klopp mentioned Ronaldo's inconsistent form
Klopp also pointed out that Cristiano Ronaldo is struggling at Man United after being consistently overlooked by new manager Erik ten Hag

Klopp urges his team to “battle” their way through a challenging stretch.

In response to a question regarding his team’s recent slump prior to their Champions League matchup with Rangers on Tuesday, Klopp stated in his pre-game press conference:

“Do you think Cristiano Ronaldo at the moment is at the top of his confidence?”

“He was for ages the best player in the world and now it is not going his way and it is not exactly the same. That happens to all of us.

“Lionel Messi played last season (his first at Paris Saint-Germain) where it was not exactly the same because these kind of things are really important to all of us and you have to work for it.”

“You have to take a step in the right direction and when you’re ready, it’s back (the confidence).”

“In individual sports you can fight yourself through it. In team sport, you have to do it together. It can be more complicated.”

“Patience is not 100 percent the right word but we have to be patient to do the right thing again, and again and again until it works out again and then we will be fine.”

“We cannot always start something completely new but if we can help the boys with a way to defend differently we will do that.”

“It is the same job I had in the time when you win 10 or 12 games in a row — you have to stay on top of it and work on the details. That is what we do now, just with a different confidence level.”
