Kansas Woman Convicted of Killing Army Husband at Fort Riley, Faces Life in Prison

A Kansas woman has been found guilty of murdering her Army soldier husband in a tragic shooting that took place at their Fort Riley home in February 2024.

On Friday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Kansas announced that 31-year-old Margaret E. Shafe was convicted of second-degree murder. She was accused of fatally shooting her husband, Army Specialist Greg Shafe, a soldier stationed at Fort Riley.

According to reports, Greg Shafe sustained a gunshot wound to the head on February 19, 2024, while on base. He was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead the following day.

At the time of his death, Greg was preparing for deployment to Poland with his new squadron, however, he had remained in Kansas to support Margaret, who was hospitalized due to complications with her pregnancy.

An obituary honoring Greg described him as a dedicated family man who adored his young daughter, Sydona. “Greg loved his family very much, and Sydona was Greg’s pride and joy. She was truly a daddy’s girl,” the obituary read.

“This is the worst type of tragedy. Greg was a beacon of light in such a dark world. We are all heartbroken and praying endlessly for Greg’s family and loved ones,” the fundraiser post stated.

Shelton also revealed that one of Greg’s siblings would be adopting his younger child, while his 9-year-old stepdaughter would live with her biological father.

Authorities have not yet disclosed what led to the shooting or any possible motive behind the crime. However, federal agencies, including the FBI, the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division, and the Fort Riley Directorate of Emergency Services, conducted an extensive investigation.

With her conviction, Margaret Shafe now faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
