New crime

A Kansas woman convicted of killing her boyfriend on his birthday has been sentenced to more than 13 years in prison, closing a case that drew attention across Wichita.

Amunique Schare Cavitt, 21, was ordered Friday to serve 13 years and nine months behind bars after a jury found her guilty of one count of second-degree murder in December 2025. The sentence was confirmed by the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

The conviction comes from the April 23, 2024 shooting death of 33-year-old Norman Eugene “Tray” Carter III. The violence took place outside a residence on North Minnesota Avenue in Wichita, shortly after noon.

According to reports, officers arrived around 12:15 p.m. following reports of gunfire and found Carter suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

Investigators said the couple had been together earlier that morning and were driving when an argument erupted. A probable cause affidavit obtained by KSN-TV detailed Cavitt’s account that Carter slapped her, struck her several times on the head and attempted to strangle her. Police documented scratches on her neck but noted no additional visible injuries.

The confrontation escalated at the intersection of Minnesota Avenue and 13th Street. Court documents indicate Carter exited the Jeep during the dispute. A witness reported that Cavitt appeared to try to run him over after he stepped out of the vehicle.

Prosecutors alleged that moments later, Cavitt exited the SUV and opened fire, the gunfire continued even after Carter fell to the ground. Investigators recovered seven shell casings in the grass near his body.

Cavitt was arrested later that afternoon and initially charged with first-degree murder. She remained in the Sedgwick County Jail on a $1 million bond throughout the trial.

Jurors were given the option to convict on the more serious first-degree murder charge but ultimately returned a verdict of second-degree murder.

With sentencing complete, Cavitt will now begin serving her term in state custody.
