The deputy president, who played a crucial role in President William Ruto’s 2022 election victory, has reportedly experienced political isolation in recent months, amid speculations of a rift with Ruto as the political landscape shifts.

In recent months, Ruto has reshuffled his cabinet, bringing in opposition figures following widespread protests over unpopular tax hikes, which resulted in over 50 fatalities.

During the impeachment debate, Gachagua urged lawmakers to “search your conscience,” emphasizing the gravity of their decision.

Despite his pleas, parliament members expressed strong discontent, with majority leader Kimani Ichung’wah declaring that Gachagua had violated multiple constitutional provisions.

Lawmakers were vocal, chanting “Rigathi must go,” and describing him as a threat to national unity.

In response to the accusations, Gachagua has maintained his innocence, denying claims of an extensive and unexplained property portfolio and allegations of promoting ethnic division.

“I will fight to the end,” he asserted at a press conference prior to the vote.

With the National Assembly’s decision made, the Senate will now evaluate the charges. A special committee may be appointed to investigate, allowing Gachagua the opportunity to defend himself.

In a legal maneuver, Gachagua has filed a court petition to halt the impeachment proceedings, initiated by allies within Ruto’s coalition. Public opinion appears divided; a recent poll indicated that 41% of Kenyans support the impeachment, while 38% oppose it.

Ruto has yet to comment on the impeachment, which has further complicated the dynamics within his administration.

Gachagua’s earlier remarks comparing the government to a company and suggesting preferential treatment for coalition voters have sparked outrage among party members.
