Kim Jong Un Unveils New Warship, Accuses U.S. of Provoking Conflict

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un unveiled a powerful new naval destroyer on Friday, calling it a major step in boosting his country’s military strength and warning the United States against escalating tensions in the region.

According to state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the 5,000-ton “multipurpose” destroyer was launched at the port city of Nampo.

The vessel, which will officially enter service next year, is said to be capable of carrying advanced anti-aircraft and anti-ship weapons, as well as nuclear-capable ballistic and cruise missiles.

Kim described the ship as a key tool in enhancing North Korea’s ability to launch preemptive strikes and expand its operational reach.

He also hinted that a nuclear-powered submarine could be next on his military agenda.

“The United States and its allies continue to provoke us through joint military drills and updated nuclear deterrence plans,” Kim said during the ceremony, according to KCNA.

“We will respond decisively to this growing crisis.”

South Korea’s military has yet to comment on the destroyer or its capabilities.

Military analysts outside North Korea are skeptical of Pyongyang’s claims, citing the country’s economic struggles and technological limits.

Some experts suggest North Korea may be relying on foreign assistance—possibly from Russia—to develop such sophisticated systems.

This move comes just weeks after North Korea showcased a nuclear-powered submarine under construction, though its actual readiness remains in question.

Since 2021, Kim has pushed an ambitious weapons development plan that includes intercontinental missiles, hypersonic weapons, spy satellites, and submarines. His government has already tested many of these technologies.

Regional tensions have escalated as North Korea continues to strengthen ties with Russia, supplying weapons and possibly even military personnel to aid President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine.

In return, South Korean officials fear Pyongyang could receive advanced technology or financial support.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed interest in reengaging with Kim, but North Korea has shown no response.
