Kylian Mbappe handed one-game La Liga suspension after Alaves red card

Kylian Mbappe has been handed a one-match suspension following his expulsion against Deportivo Alavés.

The France international was sent off in Real Madrid’s last match against Alaves in the 31st round of La Liga for his lunge on Alaves midfielder Antonio Blanco in the 38th minute of Madrid’s 1-0 win.

According to the reports, this was what happened: “In the 38th minute, player (9) Mbappe Lottin, Kylian was expelled for the following reason: For entering with his foot in a plank position at the height of the shin of an opponent, in the dispute of the ball, using excessive force”.

However, after a review, the Competitions Committee of the Spanish Football Federation reached a decision on Tuesday April 15, 2025, and announced Mbappe’s suspension by applying a minimum punishment to Mbappé.

“Mbappe: one-match suspension for a violent incident occurring during the game or as a direct consequence of a game-related incident, with additional fines in accordance with Article 52 of the Civil Code.” The Spanish Federation (RFEF) said of Mbappe’s suspension.

Mbappé might have received a three-match penalty, but it appears that luck was on his side in this case, as he was only given a one-match suspension.

What This Means

The 26-year-old will miss Madrid’s La Liga match against Athletic Club on April 20, but he will be available for the league trip to Getafe three days later. Mbappe will be ready for the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona on April 26.

The one in Vitoria is Mbappé’s fourth ban in his career. He had previously received a red card in the 2018-19 French Cup final against Rennes, the 2017-18 French Cup against Rennes, and the French league against Nimes in 2018.

Madrid is second in La Liga, four points behind leaders Barcelona. They host Arsenal on Wednesday, hoping to overcome a 3-0 lead in the second leg of the Champions League quarterfinals.
