Major League Soccer has fined Lionel Messi after the Inter Miami captain was caught on camera “grabbing” the neck of a New York City FC coach during a heated moment at the end of a 2-2 draw on February 22.

The incident occurred following a dramatic stoppage-time equalizer by Messi’s teammate, Telasco Segovia, at Inter Miami’s Chase Stadium.

The MLS Disciplinary Committee swiftly responded, issuing a fine to the 37-year-old Argentine forward for violating the league’s “Hands to the face/head/neck of an opponent” policy.

In the video of the altercation, Messi is seen approaching a member of the opposition coaching staff, placing his hand on the back of their neck amidst the argument.

The match had been a tense affair, with Messi’s assist in the dying moments of the game salvaging a draw for Miami. However, tensions flared after the final whistle, leading to the confrontation between Messi and the coach.

This is not the first time an MLS player has faced a fine for violating the league’s conduct policies. Messi’s teammate, Luis Suarez, was also fined after pinching the neck of opposing player Birk Risa during halftime of the same match.

Both incidents have raised concerns regarding the behavior of players on and off the field in the early stages of the season.

Despite his fine, Messi remains a key figure for Inter Miami, continuing to shape the team’s fortunes with his immense talent and leadership on the pitch.
