Lionel Messi led Argentina to victory in the FIFA World Cup 2022 final against France at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar, ultimately winning the one trophy left in his illustrious career.

Argentina had to wait until the penalty shootout to defeat France in what turned out to be an exciting conclusion.

However, Mbappe had other ideas, scoring twice in 97 seconds (the 80th and 81st minutes) to tie the score and force extra time.

The former Barcelona captain scored for Argentina in the 108th minute to make it 3-2, but Mbappe scored again in the 118th to tie the score at 3-3.

Messi said that it was his ambition to win the World Cup in an emotional Instagram post for his followers.

He wrote, “CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD!!!!! So many times I dreamed it, so much I wanted it that I still don’t fall, I can’t believe it. Thank you so much to my family, to all who support me and also to all who believed in us. We prove once again that Argentinians when we fight together and united we are able to achieve what we aim. The merit is of this group, which is above individuals, is the strength of all fighting for the same dream that was also the one of all Argentinians. We did it!!! LET’S GO ARGENTINA DAMN!!!!! We’re seeing each other very soon…”

Following the game, Messi was also given the Golden Ball, which is given to the top player.

Martinez received the Golden Glove for being the best goalkeeper, and Enzo Fernandez was named the best young player.

Kylian Mbappe, who finished the season with the most goals with eight, was awarded the Golden Boot.
