A disturbing incident at a North Carolina beach has led to criminal charges after a man was accused of forcibly dunking a young girl into the ocean while she screamed for help.

Authorities say the incident took place on Friday evening at Sunset Beach Pier, where witnesses reported alarming behavior involving a child and two adults. According to police, a 911 caller described seeing a man holding a girl upside down by her legs, submerging her face in the water despite her visible distress.

The suspect, identified as Christopher Maurice Lee, allegedly carried out the act repeatedly. A probable cause affidavit states he was “repeatedly placing child’s head under water/attempting to while child screamed and stated stop.” Even after briefly pulling her out, he is accused of continuing the same action.

Lesley Suzanne McClam, who was present during the incident, is also facing charges, per the Police, she did not intervene while the child was being subjected to the ordeal.

Both individuals have been charged with first-degree misdemeanor child abuse. Officers later took them into custody and transported them to Brunswick County Jail. Each has since been released after posting a $1,000 bond. Their court appearance is scheduled for May 27.

The Sunset Beach Police Department confirmed that videos and posts related to the incident have circulated widely online, drawing public concern. In response, officials emphasized the seriousness of the case.

“We are aware that social media posts and videos related to this incident have circulated. The safety and well-being of every child in our community remains our highest priority,” police said. “Anyone who witnessed the incident or has additional information is encouraged to contact Detective Sergeant Miloszar at (910) 880-8512.”

The investigation is ongoing, with the North Carolina Department of Social Services also stepping in to assess the situation and determine any further protective actions for the child involved.
