Authorities in Colombia have arrested a man who allegedly attempted to smuggle cocaine worth over $10,000 onto a flight by concealing it under his wig. Watch the video below.
The suspect was stopped at Rafael Núñez International Airport in Cartagena before boarding a flight to Amsterdam, according to police reports. The incident took place on Thursday, February 20.
In a statement released on Monday, February 24, authorities confirmed that the cocaine capsules found hidden under the wig had a total estimated street value of over 10,000 euros (approximately $10,500).
Officers shared footage showing the moment they discovered the drugs. The video captures law enforcement cutting into the suspect’s hairpiece, revealing 19 tightly packed drug-filled capsules.
“These capsules contained a substance that, after undergoing the Homologated Preliminary Identification Test (PIPH), tested positive for cocaine,” authorities stated in the report.
The suspect, a 40-year-old man, had planned to transport the drugs to Amsterdam, where he was allegedly smuggling the illegal substance for distribution.
General Gelver Yecid Peña Araque of the Metropolitan Police of Cartagena explained that the suspect was identified through profiling techniques before being subjected to a body scan and physical inspection.
“The wig was found during the search, and inside, more than 220 grams of cocaine were hidden. This represents a significant blow to criminal networks seeking illegal profits through drug trafficking,” Peña Araque stated.
He further highlighted that law enforcement efforts have intensified, leading to the arrest of more than 450 individuals involved in drug-related crimes this year alone. Additionally, over 115 kilograms of illicit substances—including marijuana, coca base, and cocaine—have been seized.
“We are delivering decisive blows to criminal organizations that not only engage in drug trafficking but also fuel violence and other serious crimes that disrupt public safety,” Peña Araque emphasized.
Following his arrest, the suspect has been handed over to the Attorney General’s Office and now faces charges related to drug trafficking, manufacturing, and possession of narcotics.
Authorities continue to urge the public to cooperate in reporting suspicious activities, emphasizing that community support is crucial in the fight against drug-related crimes.
