Authorities in Texas say what began as a bizarre “game” between two friends ended in tragedy, leaving one man dead and the other facing a murder charge.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Sean O’Donnell, 37, was taken into custody at his Houston home on August 17 in connection with the fatal shooting of his friend, Aaron Prout, 34, a British national.
Investigators revealed that the two men were inside O’Donnell’s residence when they started taking turns shooting at each other with a rifle while wearing Kevlar helmets. The bullet-resistant gear, designed to offer protection in combat and law enforcement, proved insufficient when Prout was struck and critically injured.
The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries, officials confirmed.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez expressed shock over the reckless behavior. “Hard to believe two, so-called friends, would take turns shooting at each other wearing a kevlar helmet, inside a house in a residential neighbourhood, while using a rifle,” Gonzalez wrote in a public statement.

Officials have not disclosed the type of rifle used or the distance between the men during the deadly exchange.
On Thursday, authorities charged O’Donnell with murder. He remains booked at the Harris County Jail as the investigation continues.
While Kevlar helmets are designed to stop certain types of bullets, experts note they do not provide complete protection, particularly against high-powered rifles.
The unusual case has sparked widespread discussion, raising concerns about reckless gun use, firearm safety, and the risks of treating lethal weapons as entertainment.
