Murphy pleaded guilty to multiple theft and fraud charges after targeting unsuspecting gym-goers.

Murphy’s crime spree began in September 2024 when he observed a fellow gym member entering their locker pin code at a London-area fitness center.

He used the code to open the locker, only to find that the four-digit pin was also the victim’s bank card and phone PIN.

With this crucial information, Murphy stole the victim’s bank cards and damaged the victim’s phone, rendering it unusable.

This act gave him a greater window of opportunity to withdraw £500 ($609) from an ATM and attempt a large purchase at an Apple Store, though the transaction was declined.

Murphy had been using stolen gym membership cards under false names to gain access to several gym chains, allowing him to continue his crimes undetected.

Authorities said that Murphy had previously committed similar crimes in June 2024 while out on bail.

Detective Chief Inspector Kevin Ines from the City of London Police urged gym-goers to be cautious of their personal security, especially with the rising number of crimes linked to easy access to PIN codes.

He advised that gym members should avoid using the same PIN for their locker, phone, and bank cards to protect themselves from potential fraud.

As part of his sentence, Murphy has also been issued a Criminal Behavior Order, which bans him from entering certain gyms across the country.

This case serves as a stark reminder to gym-goers to stay vigilant and safeguard their personal information, especially when using public spaces.
