24-year-old Florida man has pleaded guilty to fatally shooting his father and injuring his mother following a family argument. Joseph David Voigt admitted to second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder on Monday, according to court records.
Voigt, who was initially charged with first-degree offenses, now faces a sentencing range of 26 years to life in prison. A date for sentencing has not yet been scheduled.
The tragic incident occurred on December 7, when Bartow police were called to the Voigt family home. Officers found 63-year-old Marvin Voigt, the defendant’s father, dead in the driveway from gunshot wounds. Inside the house, Voigt’s 58-year-old mother was discovered injured but alive. She informed officers that her son had shot both her and her husband before fleeing the scene.
Authorities quickly mobilized to locate Voigt, issuing a “be on the lookout” alert for Polk County and surrounding areas. Law enforcement later spotted his vehicle in Orlando on International Drive. Local police stopped his car, apprehended him, and transported him to the Orange County Jail. He was subsequently extradited to Polk County.

In a statement, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office described Voigt’s admission of guilt. “PCSO deputies spoke to Voigt and he admitted to shooting both his father and mother,” they said. According to the deputies, Voigt claimed the argument began over his father criticizing his extensive video gaming and urging him to find a job.
Voigt’s criminal history includes prior arrests for firing a weapon in a residential area and battery.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic and senseless shooting,” Bartow Police Chief Stephen Walker said. “We sincerely appreciate the assistance provided by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and the Orlando Police Department in this case, which led to the quick arrest of the suspect, Joseph Voigt.”
As the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragedy, the case serves as a grim reminder of how domestic disputes can escalate with devastating consequences.
