A Lancaster County judge has sentenced a Pennsylvania man to life in prison without parole for the shocking 2021 killing of his wife following what prosecutors described as a “24-hour beating.”
Christopher Alexander Mello, 43, pleaded guilty Thursday to first-degree murder for the death of 39-year-old Alexandria Reynolds, whose body was found inside the couple’s Elizabethtown home in Lancaster County.
Judge David L. Ashworth immediately imposed the mandatory life sentence, telling Mello he would “spend the rest of his life behind bars.” Prosecutors said Mello’s brutal attack left Reynolds’ “entire body” covered in bruises, broken bones, and internal injuries.
According to the Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office, the violence began on September 29, 2021, and continued through the night into the following day inside the couple’s residence on West High Street, about 65 miles west of Philadelphia.
Assistant District Attorney Fritz Haverstick, who prosecuted the case, said Mello “repeatedly punched and kicked” Reynolds during the extended assault. An eyewitness described the incident as a “24-hour beating,” testimony that moved the victim’s parents to tears in court.
The medical evidence revealed more than 100 bruises across Reynolds’ body, along with fractures to her nose, jaw, neck, and orbital socket, multiple organ injuries, and a severed artery in her brain.
“It’s clear that she suffered a great deal,” Haverstick told the court. “And I hope he thinks about that for the rest of his life.”
Police were called to the home around 7 p.m. on September 30, 2021, after Mello’s father phoned 911 reporting that his son was “acting crazy” and said “something about the victim being dead.”
When Elizabethtown Borough Police arrived, they found Reynolds’ lifeless body in a bathtub on the second floor. The bathroom walls were smeared with blood, and officers noted “multiple holes roughly the size of a human head.”
Mello was quickly identified as the prime suspect. During questioning, he admitted to punching and kicking his wife, saying the assault had continued over two days.
Judge Ashworth called the crime “a horror that words cannot capture.” While Mello’s defense attorney said his client felt remorse, the convicted killer declined to speak when given the chance to address the court.
In addition to the life sentence, Mello was ordered to pay $4,500 in restitution to Reynolds’ family.
“This sentence won’t undo the pain he caused,” Ashworth said, “but it ensures he will never hurt anyone again.”
