But if they fall short they will at least be able to comfort themselves with the millions they have earned playing European football this season.

The club will take on Villarreal in the crucial clash in Gdansk, which could gift manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his first trophy since he took over the club in 2018.

He has lead the team to various other semi-finals to no avail but their Europa League semi was a dominant affair.

The Red Devils took on Roma in which they decimated the side 8-5 on aggregate thanks to an incredible 6-2 win in the first leg.

But they began their European season as they played in the group stage of the Champions League, in which they earned €23.35million (around £16.4m).

The club were in Group H with Paris Saint-Germain, RB Leipzig and Istanbul Basaksehi, and the total amount earned included the initial €15.25m (£10.7m) for taking part in the pool.

They left the competition at this stage and despite not going very far in Europe’s top league the club are likely to pocket €20m (£14.4m) from TV revenue when market pools are worked out.

However, their dominance in the Europa League has led to more financial reward as the base fee for the competition gave United €2.92m.

Their last-32 victory over Real Sociedad saw them win €0.5m and their last-16 win over AC Milan added another €1.1m to the pot.

Another €1.5m was claimed when United defeated Granada in the quarter-finals and a further €2.4m was won after their semi-final victory over Roma.

The final will add even more money with the losing fee amounting to €4.5m and if they win they will bag €8.5m.

This means United will have accumulated, depending on how the TV market pools play out, €60m-80m (£51m-69m) over the past season, but money will not be what Solskjaer is targeting as he looks for silverware.
