U.S. Representative Mark Green (R-Tenn.) has officially resigned from Congress, dealing a fresh blow to the already narrow Republican majority in the House of Representatives.
Green, who has served Tennessee’s 7th District since 2019, announced his departure in an emotional post shared on X (formerly Twitter).
“It’s with a heavy heart that I say farewell. To my constituents across Tennessee’s 7th District thank you. The trust you put in me is humbling. I will look back fondly on my years of serving as your voice in Washington,” Green wrote.
Green’s resignation reduces the GOP’s hold in the lower chamber to 219 seats, compared to the Democrats’ 212, further heightening political uncertainty as the nation gears up for the 2026 midterm elections.
With just a seven-seat margin, Republican leadership faces increased pressure to maintain control in a deeply polarized political climate.
Recent political developments have placed added strain on the Republican Party. President Donald Trump’s administration is under renewed scrutiny following revelations about its handling of files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, a controversy that has created friction between Republican lawmakers and the president’s inner circle.
Meanwhile, Democratic enthusiasm is on the rise. A recent CNN poll revealed that 72% of Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters are “extremely motivated” to vote in the next election cycle, compared to just 50% of Republican and GOP-leaning voters. The disparity underscores a growing energy among Democratic constituents eager to reclaim control of Congress.
The Senate remains closely divided as well, with Republicans holding 53 seats against Democrats’ 45. The remaining two seats are occupied by independents who caucus with the Democrats, effectively amplifying their influence in key legislative decisions.
With congressional control hanging in the balance, both parties are mobilizing aggressively for 2026. The departure of Rep. Green adds another layer of unpredictability to an already volatile political landscape.
