Six tourists, including a U.S. citizen, have tragically died in Laos after consuming alcohol tainted with methanol, authorities report. The incident occurred in Vang Vieng, a popular backpacker destination in the country.

On Friday, November 22, the family of 19-year-old Australian Holly Bowles confirmed her death after being on life support in a Bangkok hospital.

Bowles had been severely ill since November 13, following a night out with her friend Bianca Jones, also 19, who passed away as well.

The family released a statement saying, “Our beautiful girl Holly is now at peace,” finding comfort in knowing she brought joy to many.

In addition to Bowles and Jones, an American man, a British woman, and two Danish tourists also lost their lives in the suspected poisoning. Multiple other individuals were reported to be in serious condition.

According to local police, several people have been detained for questioning in connection with the case, though no charges have been filed yet.

Among those questioned were the manager and owner of the Nana Backpacker Hostel, where the Australian tourists had been staying.

The hostel has stated that the drinks consumed by the victims did not come from its bar.

The U.S. Department of State confirmed the death of the American tourist and issued an alert warning U.S. citizens about the risk of methanol poisoning, especially when consuming spirit-based alcoholic beverages.

Methanol is a toxic substance often added illegally to alcohol to boost its potency. The U.S. Embassy is providing consular assistance to the affected families.
