A Michigan family practice doctor has been arrested following a disturbing undercover sting operation in Florida, where authorities say he solicited a sexual relationship with a 5-year-old child.
According to the Port St. Lucie Police Department, detectives began investigating in June after uncovering explicit online conversations. Officials said that Dr. William Murdoch exchanged “stomach churning messages” with an undercover officer posing as the mother of a young girl.
Investigators allege Murdoch outlined “his plan to groom the child and quickly turn the situation sexual,” with messages so graphic that police said they could not be fully disclosed.
“Murdoch, was pursuing a platonic relationship with the fictitious mom to see if she would allow her 5-year-old to be courted by and have a sexual relationship with him,” police said.
Authorities further stated: “Murdoch, goes into detail of his demented behavior that is too explicit to share in its entirety. However, it varied in having a sexual relationship in multiple ways.”
The investigation revealed even more troubling exchanges. Police said Murdoch’s iCloud and messaging accounts contained discussions on topics including impregnation, abortions, and “intentional drug and alcohol use to cause birth defects.”
Florida officials issued a warrant for his arrest, and Murdoch was taken into custody in Michigan by US Marshals. He is awaiting extradition to Florida, where he faces charges of soliciting a parent to consent to sexual conduct involving a child.
Murdoch had been employed by ProMedica Health System in Monroe, Michigan. The health system released a statement confirming his immediate suspension.
“This arrest triggered an immediate suspension of Dr. Murdoch’s hospital privileges and a termination of all activity involving the physician,” the company said. “We are supporting investigation efforts in this case. Our priority is the safety and care of our patients and their families.”
Cases like this highlight the increasing efforts of law enforcement agencies across the U.S. to crack down on online child exploitation. Undercover stings remain one of the most effective tools to identify alleged predators and bring them to justice before harm is done.
Murdoch remains in custody pending his transfer to Florida to face prosecution.
