A federal jury has convicted a 37-year-old Minnesota woman of first-degree murder and arson in a case that devastated the Red Lake Nation community and drew national attention for its severity.
Jennifer Marie Stately was found guilty after a two-and-a-half-week trial on multiple federal charges stemming from the March 15, 2024 killings of her two young sons.
Prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota said the jury rejected her insanity defense and instead convicted her on two counts of first-degree premeditated murder, two counts of murder committed during child abuse, one count of murder committed during arson, and one count of arson.
Court records show that Stately stabbed her sons, Remi, 6, and Tristan, 5, inside their family home on the Red Lake Nation reservation. Authorities said she then intentionally set fire to the home’s exits, trapping the boys inside before fleeing with her 3-year-old son.

Emergency responders later pronounced the older child dead from stab wounds. The younger child died from smoke inhalation caused by the fire, according to investigators.
The surviving toddler became the subject of an Amber Alert and was located hours later in Todd County — roughly 150 miles from the family’s home. Officials reported the child had burns across much of his face and showed signs of neglect.

Throughout the trial, Stately’s legal team argued that she was suffering from severe mental illness at the time of the killings. Her attorney, Paul Engh, told the Minnesota Star Tribune that his client “thought the house was demonized” and that Remi and Tristan had “threatened to kill her.”
Following the verdict, Engh said, “The verdict has compounded the tragedy. Ms. Stately has now forever lost her life to a prison cell.”
The jury ultimately rejected the insanity defense, concluding that the evidence supported premeditation and criminal intent. The conviction means Stately now faces the possibility of life in federal prison, although a sentencing date has not yet been scheduled.
Community leaders expressed sorrow while acknowledging the legal outcome. Red Lake Department of Public Safety Director Kendall Kingbird Sr. said, “The guilty verdict this week brings justice to a case that has deeply affected our entire Red Lake Nation community. Most importantly, our thoughts remain with the family and loved ones of the victims. No verdict can undo the pain of their loss, but we hope this outcome provides some sense of closure.”
The surviving child is currently in the care of Stately’s mother, according to her attorney.
