The Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy), has for some time now become the hottest issue now in Ghana since the ruling government proposed and it has generated hew and cry across the country with many not happy with Government’s decision to tax transactions.

This same issue has also not been easy to deal with in the parliament house, NPP Parliatary members are in support for the bill to be passed while the opposition, NDC is not in support with the motive that this new tax won’t be of great help to people of the country.

Well, the President has however reacted to why he thinks it is very necessary that the bill gets passed regardless of the opposition’s decision not to agree with it.

Addressing chiefs and elders of the Dzodze Traditional Area when they paid a courtesy call on him at Jubilee House in Accra on Tuesday night, February 1, 2022, President Akufo-Addo said passing it will help boost the country’s economic status.

The president in response to calls by people that he returns to International Monetary Funds (IMF) for a solution to deal with money issues facing Ghana claimed that the introduction and passing of the E-Levy tax will be the best way forward to boosting and helping the nation become self-dependent and also adding that Ghana cannot always be depending on foreign grants and foreign loans to keep the economy going.

“it is not going to be possible for us in Ghana to continue forever to be dependent on foreign grants and foreign loans to keep our economy going” and that “we ourselves would have to find the money for our development.” according to Nana Addo.

He also disclosed that E-Levy introduction is vital to keep the country’s economy going since it had to incur additional expenditures such as the free water, the free electricity, and the provision of free food as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, passing the bill will be of great help to close the gap

“These were unavoidable expenses that the government has to make. The fiscal impact was very considerable and these are the efforts we are now making which is being resisted by the opposition to try and close the gab” President Akufo-Addo said, the reason said, “it has become necessary for us to look within for our sustainability and not to depend on aid.”

“That is the reason why it has become necessary for us to introduce these measures like this famous tax [E-Levy] which has caused so much unnecessary, in my view, disputation”.

“I am determined to persevere to make sure that we find the means to address our issues as a country,” he added.

Togbui Dey III, Chief of  Dzodze Traditional area, who led the delegation to visit the president at the Jubilee house made some requests including the building of a market in the Dzodze traditional area, the expansion of Dzodze water system, among others.

Well, akufo-Addo after listening to their request then assured them that their requests will be given the attention it deserves by the relevant State institutions.
