In a fiery parliamentary session on November 29, NDC Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram constituency, Samuel Nartey George, took a stand against the 2024 Budget Statement presented by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

George criticized the budget, labeling it as “empty” and lacking a concrete plan to alleviate the prevailing economic struggles.

During a debate on the approval of the 2024 budget, George expressed his dissatisfaction with the leadership of Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, emphasizing the government’s failure to instill hope in the country’s restoration through the budget presentation.

He accused the Majority of running from their own budget, describing it as “empty” and a “vote of no confidence.”

“The budget is empty, Kyei is clutching at straws. It is the disposition of the Majority, that air of arrogance, incompetent arrogance at managing their caucus that has brought the government where it is and will bring the government to its knees,” George stressed.

His strong assertions came in the wake of a dramatic walkout by the Majority during the approval of the 2024 Budget Statement and Economic Policy.

The walkout was prompted by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin’s call for a headcount during the budget statement approval, leading to a protest from the Majority side.

George further stated that the Majority caucus, and by extension the government of the day, lacks the capability to restore the economy.

He challenged them to return to the chamber and participate in the vote if they truly believed in their budget and respected the Ghanaian people.

This parliamentary showdown highlights the deep divisions and tensions surrounding economic policies, with implications for the nation’s economic future.
