A New York man who brutally stabbed the mother of his children inside their shared home then attempted to erase evidence of the attack has been sentenced to up to 17 years behind bars.
Albaro Chacon, 38, received a prison term of 15 to 17 years on Monday following his conviction in Suffolk County Court. A jury found him guilty in November 2025 of attempted assault, assault, tampering with evidence, and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
According to Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney, the attack occurred in November 2024 at the family’s residence in Brentwood, New York. Prosecutors said the victim, the mother of Chacon’s two children, was asleep when she awoke to find him standing over her holding a knife and telling her, “You are going to die here.”
The woman fought back, suffering stab wounds to her arms as she tried to divert the knife away from her chest. At the time, her then-2-year-old niece was asleep in the same room, and authorities said the victim struggled to shield both herself and the child during the attack.
She eventually managed to flee the bedroom and ran outside, where she flagged down a passing motorist to call 911. As she escaped, she noticed her two children—a 6-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl—sitting in a car parked outside. Investigators believe Chacon placed the children in the vehicle before launching the attack.
Chacon briefly chased the victim outside before the young boy exited the car and pleaded with his father to stop hurting his mother. Chacon then returned to the house.
While the victim waited for police to arrive, prosecutors said Chacon attempted to clean up the scene. When the woman later re-entered the home to avoid him, she noticed a strong smell of bleach and saw that the blood-soaked bed sheets had been removed.
Police arrived shortly afterward and took Chacon into custody. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of her injuries.
In sentencing Chacon, the court cited the violent nature of the crime, the presence of children during the attack, and his attempt to destroy evidence. District Attorney Tierney described the case as a stark example of domestic violence placing entire families at risk.
