No Ghana Card No Electricity Meter – Energy Minister, Napo

By Stermy 3 Min Read

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh better known as Napo, Ghana’s Minister of Energy, has revealed that Ghanaians who do not have a Ghana Card would soon be unable to purchase an electricity meter.

This simply means that Ghanaian citizens who are not able to register for the controversial identification card nicknamed Ghana Card will not be able to have electricity in their homes in some days coming soon as they will be denied the right to own a meter.

According to the minister, the law which is yet to be passed is however in the government’s plans to dring development to the energy sector.

He continued by saying that this was not something they concocted to upset Ghanaians, but rather that they were according to the laws established by the nation, which state that anyone without a Ghana Card shouldn’t be permitted to own an electricity meter..

He said;

“Very soon, if you don’t have Ghana Card, you wouldn’t get a meter. Regulations are subjected to change and it is all about development”.

“It is the rules set by this country that I follow. It is the rules set by the country which states that, if you need a meter, do this or that”, the Minister explained.

This new information from Napo follows the recent announcement by Hon. Ursula Owusu Akuful, Minister of Communication, that the deadline for re-registration of sim cards with the Ghana Card has been extended until September 30th, and that citizens who fail to link their sim cards with their Ghana cards before the deadline will be barred from using their sims.

In another news, the Electoral Commission of Ghana has also come out with a warning “No Ghana Card, No Voting” suggesting that citizens who have no Ghana Card will no longer be accepted into the voters register to vote in the upcoming General elections.

Such details were provided by Dr. Bossman Asare, the Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC) in charge of Corporate Services.

He said;

“The Electoral Commission in collaboration with our partners took the decision that now let us have the Ghana card as the main requirement.

“So what this means is that as soon as you acquire your Ghana card with a continuous registration. You just go to our district office where you are located then you go and register and your name will be put on the roll of voters.”
