Award-winning Ghanaian actress turned fashion designer, Pascaline Edwards has some words of advice for young and aspiring filmmakers who want to venture into the movie industry in Ghana.
The 2002 Ghana Best Female Actress in a recent interview on Onua FM’s ‘Adwuma Adwuma’ with Felicia Osei, said the movie industry alone as a stream of income would not be able to provide anyone with the requisite resources to build a house or start a business.
The 53-year-old actress with 30 years of experience in the industry, has valuable insights into the workings of the movie business, despite the changes that have occurred over time.
She advises young and aspiring actors to be savvy and not to rely solely on their movie earnings, but to have a side hustle that can generate income even if their film career is not thriving.
Edwards emphasizes that the movie industry can help establish one’s brand and lead to lucrative ambassadorial deals which is one good way to make some cool cash, but one relying on income from acting alone is not sufficient.
“The movie industry propels you to a certain level. It gives you a brand. You may get Brand Ambassadorial deals and endorsement which can be lucrative but the income from the movies and set is inadequate,
“If you have to sell groundnut and maize as your regular day job do that and add the acting as your side hustle because it’s really a hand-to-mouth industry.” she said.
Pascaline Edwards has shared her opinion that relying solely on acting earnings to build wealth in the Ghanaian movie industry is not realistic. According to her, her colleagues who claim to have made significant amounts of money through acting alone are not being truthful.
She believes that the income from acting alone in Ghana is insufficient even to build a house.
“Whoever in the industry says they’ve made a fortune from making movies is a liar,” she said.
While her opinion may reflect her experiences and views on the industry, it is important to note that individual experiences may vary.
