Pink Floyd Sell Music Catalog to Sony for $400 Million

According to Variety, legendary English rock band, Pink Floyd have sold rights to their recorded music, name, and likeness to Sony for $400 million.

After years of failed attempts (negotiations, disputes, and even infighting among the band members). The transaction reportedly took longer due to bitter tensions among band members, notably Waters, Gilmour, drummer Nick Mason, and the estates of Richard Wright and Roger “Syd” Barrett.

Much of the disagreement centered around Roger Waters’ controversial political views, particularly his outspoken support of Russia and harsh criticism of Israel, Ukraine, and the U.S. His comments over the years created friction within the band and complicated the negotiations for their music catalog’s sale.

The deal with Sony Music includes Pink Floyd’s recorded music rights, as well as name-and-likeness rights, which cover the band’s iconic artwork, merchandise, theatrical usage, and similar rights. However, it does not include the band’s songwriting rights, which remain with the individual writers.

Hipgnosis, the venture-capital startup behind many of those deals, recently sold to Blackstone for $1.6 billion, amid criticism of Merck Mercuriadis’ management. Mercuriadis has since stepped down as CEO according to Pitfork.

Pink Floyd’s deal happens to be one of the largest in the industry in recent years, it has been out there up for sale for several years with an initial asking price of $500 million.

The value of Pink Floyd’s music catalog is immense, with albums like The Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, Wish You Were Here, and Animals standing out as some of the most influential works in rock history.

This legacy, combined with the band’s enduring popularity, has made their catalog one of the most sought-after assets in the music industry. Sony has already spent billions acquiring catalogs from artists like Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan, and this acquisition adds to their impressive portfolio.
