According to the Vatican, former Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has passed away at the age of 95.
Remember that Pope Benedict served as head of the Catholic Church from 2009 until his resignation in 2013.
After Gregory XII in 1415, Pope Benedict became the first pope to resign.
Although it was revealed that the Pope’s health had declined recently, the Vatican had said on Friday that he was in “stable” condition and had taken part in Thursday’s service in his chamber.
To that effect, the Vatican declared in a statement that:
“With sorrow, I inform you that the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, passed away today at 9:34 in the Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican. Further information will be provided as soon as possible,” the Director of the Holy See press office Matteo Bruni iterated.
In order to allow the faithful to pay their respects, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI’s body will lie in state in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, according to the Vatican press office.
