Paris St-Germain overcame 13-time Champions League winners Real Madrid in the first leg of their last-16 encounter, thankss to a spectacular strike by Kylian Mbappe in stoppage time.

The France striker, who has been linked with a summer move to Real Madrid, gathered the ball on the left flank following a superb backheel by Neymar and then sprinted between two defenders inside the box before slotting past Thibaut Courtois to send the Parc des Princes into raptures.

It was a thrilling climax to a game that appeared to be heading for a draw for PSG, especially after Lionel Messi’s penalty was saved just after the hour mark.

The hosts had dominated possession but were unable to break down a well-organized Real defense, who had only allowed PSG one chance on target in the first half when Mbappe’s attempt was saved by Courtois’ legs.

However, the introduction of Neymar, who was making his first appearance since November following an injury, proved decisive.

With dangerous crosses and brilliant runs, he gave Real a number of difficulties before providing the key pass for Mbappe to work his magic with seconds remaining.
