Who Succeeds, the queen?
So as it stands, Queen Elizabeth’s son, Charles, 73, has been made the king as he succeeds his mother immediately according to the country’s protocol
Large crowds are expected to gather outside Buckingham Palace in central London, while tributes pour in from across the country and the world.
She was the Queen of the United Kingdom and of 14 other sovereign countries from 6 February 1952, until her death. Her reign of 70 years and seven months was the longest of any British monarch.
Elizabeth was born in Mayfair, London, as the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth). Her father acceded to the throne in 1936 upon the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII, making Elizabeth the heir presumptive.
She was educated privately at home and began to undertake public duties during the Second World War, serving in the Auxiliary Territorial Service.
In November 1947, she married Philip Mountbatten, a former prince of Greece and Denmark, and their marriage lasted 73 years until his death in April 2021.
They had four children together: Charles, King of the United Kingdom; Anne, Princess Royal; Prince Andrew, Duke of York; and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex.
American President Joe Biden Reacts to the death
Following Queen Elizabeth II’s death, the White House canceled the president’s Thursday afternoon speech on the coronavirus vaccination.
Biden was set to make a public call for Americans to obtain updated coronavirus vaccination doses, as well as discuss his administration’s intentions to make omicron-targeting boosters widely available this autumn. The White House did not announce if the president’s speech will be postponed.
The queen’s death was announced as White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre finished her news briefing on Thursday afternoon.
“Our hearts and our thoughts go to the family members of the queen, [and to] the people of the United Kingdom,” said Jean-Pierre, visibly surprised, adding that she would not comment further to let the president speak for himself.
Tributes have already started coming in from many prominent figures, and heads of state.
