‘I’m not a complainer, and I haven’t attempted to make it into a bigger thing than it is,’ Sterling stated on Thursday night.

‘I go about my business, doing what I need to do.’ And I’m ready to go: I’m looking forward to playing football matches on a regular basis and scoring goals on a regular basis.

‘At the end of the day, if football isn’t up to a particular standard for me, I’m not really happy.’ I need to be playing football if I want to maintain a certain degree of enjoyment. I need to be scoring goals and having a good time.’

Sterling’s current contract at the Etihad Stadium has 18 months left on it, but he has chosen to hold off on discussing a new deal until his short-term future is addressed. Guardiola was lately in the news.
