Ghanaian reggae musician Ras Kuuku has stirred controversy by questioning whether Nacee should be classified as a gospel artiste.
In a recent interview with DJ Slim on Daybreak Hitz, Ras Kuuku voiced his disagreement with the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) Board’s decision to restrict gospel categories to only gospel musicians.
The outspoken reggae artiste argued that some musicians, including Nacee, have produced both gospel and secular songs, raising concerns about categorization. He believes this rule is unfair to artistes like himself, who have also created impactful gospel music.
During the conversation, Ras Kuuku boldly stated, “Nacee is not a gospel musician; Nacee is a producer.” His remark followed discussions about why certain artistes are excluded from gospel categories at the TGMA.
DJ Slim countered by pointing out that Nacee has composed and performed many gospel songs over the years. However, Ras Kuuku insisted that Nacee’s involvement in secular music affects his gospel credibility.

He specifically referenced Kwen Kwen, a song Nacee produced for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) political party, as well as other non-gospel tracks.
Beyond his gospel compositions, Nacee is also known for secular hits such as Boys Boys, Dondo, and Paddy Paddy. Ras Kuuku believes that an artiste’s body of work should determine their category placement, rather than solely their gospel contributions.
The Telecel Ghana Music Awards defines Best Gospel Song as “the song adjudged by the Academy, Board, and the General Public as the most popular Christian song, commercially released in the year under review.” The category is exclusive to gospel artistes, a rule that Ras Kuuku finds problematic.
He argues that gospel music should be judged based on impact rather than the artiste’s overall brand. According to him, some secular artistes have released powerful gospel songs, yet they are not considered for gospel awards due to classification rules.
Further emphasizing his stance, Ras Kuuku declared that his song Me Mpaebo is one of the biggest gospel releases in the last decade. Despite its spiritual message, he is not recognized as a gospel artiste and therefore cannot compete in gospel categories.
