Another round of poor defending in the second half which led Foden’53’ to score from a Fernandinho cross. Vinicius made it past Fernandinho, running in a straight line towards Ederson and getting a cool finish in to make the game 3-2 a minute after City’s goal.

However, a stunning left-footed strike from Bernardo Silva’74’ once again added to City’s tally, However, Laporte handball in the box led to a penalty kick which reduce Los Blancos defecit. Benzema showed up and ensured it was clean after the Frenchman missed PK against Osasuna last weekend.

Analysing the first leg and tie as a whole, Carlo Ancelotti said: “When you lose a match it’s never good, but I think it’s very different to the PSG first leg. We fought and competed in this one.”

I feel that we started very poorly and softly, conceding two goals, which was quite frustrating as we lost a lot of individual duels. With some more focus, we could have avoided that.”

But, after that, we showed what we have done in recent times, a great reaction. We competed. We did well with the ball. Of course, for the second leg, we need to defend better and this is very important. It’s a defeat, but a defeat with which we stay alive. The second leg is quite clear.”

If we defend better we’ll win. If not, we’ll be out. We’ll fight to have another magical night.”

Guardiola to BT Sport after the game: “It was a fantastic game for both sides. We did many good things.
Unfortunately we conceded goals and we could not score more. But two games and we have another one in one week.

We played a fantastic game against an incredible team. The moments where they rise and come back into the game in the first half I think we gave them as our build-up was so nervous.”

Normally we are so safe and so good. Also they press really good and strong. All around the world and for Manchester City, we are so proud. But it is about reaching the final and sometimes football happens. We go to Madrid to try to win the game.” win the game.”

The second leg will likely be a far more difficult game for both side as the Premier league side travels to Spain to face Los Blancos in the second leg on Wednesday 4th May..
